Drawing Dr J in the Pottery Art Therapy room in River House 06/08
I drew this dried Dogfish in Dr Js Lower Abdomen and a sea-horse inside its abdomen, because of the medical symbolism of the sea-horse and its formal resemblance to a Treble Clef.
I meet with Dr J (Fredrics’ Psychiatrist) in his office at River House (Forensic Unit) Bethlem Hospital at 10am. Dr J tells me how he became a Doctor after enjoying dissecting Dogfish at School, he said he grew cynical working as a hospital doctor and it was then that he decided to change to psychiatry as he found it intellectually stimulating. He worked at Broadmoor Hospital where he looked after Female Psychotic Patients before moving to work at River House. I made this Drawing after our meeting…
I drew this bird flying around Fredric to represent a time in Fredrics life when he believed that birds where speaking directly to him.
Four Qualities of Ancient Greek Philosophy, In association with the four elements, humours, organs and seasons.
Nicholas Culpeper wrote in his Herbal that Borage and Fumitory mixed together, cool and cleanse the temper and the blood. Here I am drawing them in the heart, which is associated with hot temperaments in Hippocratic medicine.
I drew this snake skin from the Grant Museum into the fabric of Fredrics hat.
The patient Fredric is from the Republic of Congo and remembered masks and rituals through his drawings.
Some of Fredrics Drawings had animal spirits, chimerical men and snakes emerging from human heads. Here I am drawing this snake skeleton emerging from the head within the portrait.
